Security Tips for Your Home While on Vacation

A family vacation is something we look forward to for most of the year. While you are eager to leave the home and start your adventure, it is important to first make sure that your home is secure and protected to prevent burglaries. Keep reading for security tips for your home while on vacation.

Lock All Windows and Doors

It may seem like an obvious statement, but it is important to check that all windows and doors are locked before leaving for a long vacation. Go all around the house, even if you have a basement. Make sure that glass sliding doors are securely locked. Lock windows even if they are on the second story of the home. Burglars will enter your home anyway that they can if they are desperate enough. Do not make it easier for them by forgetting to lock a window or leave a door open.

Keep Your Mailbox Empty

Piled up mail is a clear sign that the resident of the house is away. While you are gone, ask someone to pick up your mail for you. Or, you can ask that your mail be suspended through your local post office. Postpone any newspaper deliveries. Make sure that any packages that are scheduled to be delivered will be either delayed or picked up by someone you trust.

Use Timed Lights

A dark house during the evening hours alerts the neighborhood that no one is home. Remedy this by using timers to set off certain lights in the home to turn on during the evening. You can do the same for lights outside of your home, or use motion activated lights.

Don’t Announce Vacation Plans over Social Media

Several people have made the mistake of posting all of their vacation plans over social media platforms, just to find that their house had been broken into while they were away. While it is understandable that you wish to share your excitement about your upcoming adventures, save any vacation-related posts until after you have returned home.
