Winter Driving Tips

Winter Driving Tips

If you live in the New England area, then you know all about harsh winter weather conditions. But the cold months cannot stop you from living your life. If you want to go skiing or snowboarding, or simply go to work, you have to winterize your car and be confident in your driving abilities. Here are some winter driving tips.

Winterize Your Car

At the beginning of the winter, you should winterize your car – make sure it is up to date with fluids, brakes and fuel. Make sure your oil change is up to date, and make sure tired are properly inflated and rotated. During the cold months, you should keep your fuel tank at half level or a little below. Letting the gas level go down to a quarter of a tank or below could allow the gas to freeze, which would leave permanent damage to your vehicle.

Drive Carefully

One of the most important winter driving tips is to accelerate and decelerate slowly. Stepping hard on the gas or brake while driving in the snow can cause your car to lose traction, and then you may lose control of the vehicle. While driving in these harsh weather conditions, it is vital to keep calm and accelerate and decelerate carefully.

Another essential driving tip is to stay further away from the car in front of you than you normally would. During warmer weather, you may stay two to three car lengths behind the car in front of you, but during snowy weather, you should increase that to five to six car lengths. This will prevent an accident from happening if you have to hit the brakes.

Also, remember to stay alert. Do not become distracted while driving in the snow, or during any other time. It’s vital that you keep your eyes on the road and stay focused to getting to your destination safely.

Check the Weather and Plan Route Ahead of Time

Being aware of current weather conditions could save you a lot of trouble while on the road. If you can avoid driving in snowy weather, then you absolutely should. If you can’t avoid it, then you should plan your route accordingly, and decide if you want to take the highway, or main local roads.
